In addition to world-class winter and summer sports, Whistler is home to a number of award-winning cultural experiences as well. One of such is the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre. The Squamish and Lil’wat Nations were among the first to occupy the land from North Vancouver to past Pemberton. The centre was built by these First Nations groups to showcase their art, history, culture, provide an insight into the history of Whistler and of course, share their story with others! Come join us as we go visit the exhibits, tours and interactive workshops that are all part of the experience at the SLCC.

Grab a map that thoroughly shows you where all the exhibits, activities, gallery and coffee shop are.

Wander around on your own or take a tour that starts every hour on the hour to discover legends, people, art, history, and culture. Stay as long as you like to fully grasp everything your eyes are taking in.

Spectacular art that translated the history of the Squamish and Lil’wat Nations is everywhere you look. Be sure to read the signage to understand the importance and significance of each piece.

There is a permanent exhibition that features baskets, blankets, canoes, carvings (also known as totem poles) from both nations. There is also a current exhibition that travels and changes throughout the year. The canoes have a special meaning. According to the website, the Coast Salish culture of the Squamish people and the Interior Salish culture of the Lil’wat people canoe carving was nearly a lost art. Master Carver, Khaápulk Sesiyam, Ray Natraoro spent years researching historical records and seeking advice from the elders in order to revive the unique Squamish style of carving. This particular one came from a single cedar tree!

Visit the Gift Shop and Gallery to shop First Nation’s handcrafted art and merchandise. There, you will find weaving, jewellery and art…to just a name a few! Weaving is a traditional art form of the Salish people of British Columbia and Washington, who have been called the Weavers of the Pacific Northwest!
The Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre is an experience that joins history and culture, right in the heart of Whistler. Add this activity to your list of things to do. Better yet, grab an Adventure Passport and save on your entry into the SLCC!
